Finish joint
Visible or concealed joint where finish materials meet, terminate, or allow movement.
What finish joints control
Finish joints manage the meeting point between materials, planes, movement zones, and service interfaces. They may be expressed visually or hidden in a shadow gap, sealant line, trim, or movement joint.
Why they affect cost
Bad joints are small in size but highly visible. They crack, stain, collect dirt, bridge movement, or reveal poor geometry at the exact stage when the project is supposed to look complete.
Common mistakes
- A movement joint is painted or tiled over because it interrupts the visual design.
- Material transitions are solved late with oversized trims or sealant.
- Wet and dry zones use the same joint logic even though exposure is different.
What to inspect
- Movement allowance and backing logic.
- Alignment with doors, openings, cabinets, and ceiling lines.
- Sealant compatibility and maintenance expectations.
