Commissioning proves that installed systems work together under realistic operating conditions. It should be planned as evidence-based testing, not as a last-day defect hunt.

Prepare test plan and readiness checklist

Define what will be tested, by whom and against which acceptance criteria.

  • List systems, equipment, rooms, zones and required test records.
  • Confirm power, water, drainage, access, controls and safety conditions.
  • Close obvious installation defects before formal testing starts.

Hold point: Functional testing should not start until readiness checklist and test forms are prepared.

Run functional tests and balancing

Verify actual performance instead of visual completion.

  • Test pumps, drainage, pressure, electrical loads, controls and safety shutoffs.
  • Measure airflow, temperature response, condensate removal and equipment noise.
  • Record failed tests with owner, cause, correction and retest date.

Hold point: Systems should not be accepted until failed tests are corrected and retested.

Compile evidence and release for handover

Convert tests into records the owner can use later.

  • Collect signed test sheets, photos, balancing results and equipment data.
  • Update defect list with remaining items and acceptance status.
  • Transfer commissioning evidence into the handover pack.

Hold point: Handover should not proceed until test evidence, retest results and open defects are clearly separated.
