Work sequence
The planned order in which construction activities are executed so each trade has the right access, information and inspection status.
What a work sequence means
A work sequence is the planned order of activities on site. It answers a practical question: what must happen first so the next trade can work safely, productively and without damaging completed work?
Why sequencing affects cost
Poor sequencing creates waiting time, double handling, broken finishes, inaccessible defects and repeated mobilization. A simple example is closing ceilings before MEP pressure tests or installing landscape levels before the plinth waterproofing is inspected. The direct repair cost may be small, but delay and access cost are often much larger.
How to use it in planning
- Link each sequence to a construction stage and checklist.
- Define hold points before hidden work is closed.
- Identify tools, access, temporary works and material consumption norms.
- Use the sequence to challenge contractor schedules and method statements.
