Method statement
A document that explains how a construction activity will be carried out, controlled, inspected and made safe.
What a method statement includes
A method statement describes the practical way a work package will be delivered. A useful document covers the scope, materials, labor, equipment, access, temporary works, sequence, safety controls, quality checks and records.
Why it matters for builders and investors
Without a method statement, a contractor can price one approach and execute another. That creates disputes over productivity, access, protection and rework. For investors, the method statement is a way to see whether the price includes the real means of doing the work.
Good method statement signals
- Clear step-by-step sequence.
- Named hold points and inspection records.
- Required tools, equipment and access assumptions.
- Material handling, protection and waste allowances.
- Links to drawings, specifications and supplier data.
