Hold point
A required pause in the work sequence where an inspection or approval must happen before work continues.
What a hold point is
A hold point is a planned stop in the work sequence. The team cannot proceed until inspection, testing or approval is complete. Hold points are used where the next step will hide work or make correction expensive.
Common hold point examples
- Rebar and embeds before concrete pour.
- Waterproofing details before tile or protection layers.
- MEP pressure tests before wall or ceiling closure.
- Roof drains and overflow before interior ceiling closure.
- Commissioning failures before handover acceptance.
Why it matters
Without hold points, defects become invisible and disputes move from simple correction to destructive investigation. A good checklist should show exactly where work must pause.
